The castle is named, not after St. Hilarion the Great, the founder of monasticism in Palestine who died near Paphos about A.D. 371, but after a later saint, of whom little is known. He is counted among the three hundred saints who according to local tradition, sought refuge in Cyprus when the Arabs overran the Holly Land. His relics were preserved in the castle and "kept right workshipfully" according to an English visitor in the 14th century. It may be presumed that he retired to this hill-top to live the life of a hermit and that as the hermitage of St. Neophytos near Paphos, a monastery was established to shelter those who should follow his example, as well pilgrims to his tomb.

The ancient kingdom of Lambousa (translates as -the shining one-) was founded by Phoenician traders in the 8th century B.C. and remained a quietly prosperous until the Christian era, when groves of mulberries fed a highly profitable silk industry. The foundations of a lighthouse, sea-water fishponds and a portion of the city's wall survive from the 6th century Byzantine town. A silver dinner service from this period was found here in the early years of this century, presumably hidden just before the Saracens sacked the city in the 7th century.

The castle which lies to the north - east of Kyrenia dominates the harbour and is built on the tetragonal form. It is first referred to by ancient sources in the year 1191 A.D. When the English King Richard The Lion Heart defeated lsaac Comnenus on his way to the Crusades and conquered Cyprus.

Once a small sleepy village, Ayyorgi (Karaoglanoglu) has now grown to be a sought-after suburb of Kyrenia, about 5km to the west of the town. After the events of 1974, Ayyorgi was renamed Karaoglanoglu in memory of Col. Karaoglanoglu who was one of the first Turkish soldiers to fall on landing Cyprus.

The community of Avgorou within its efforts to preserve, protect and promote the cultural heritage of the area, bought and renovated the Koutras’ House, a rare specimen of traditional architecture of the area, built in 1921.This impressive farmhouse, built of stone, is one of the few houses in the area with outer coating. The Avgorou Community Council bought all of the construction, as well as a part of the plot including the stockyard, the water reservoir, the wheel-well and the courtyard. With the co-operation of the Pierides Foundation the house has been renovated and is now functioning as the Avgorou – Pierides Foundation Folk Art Museum, aspiring to bring to the community an invaluable example of the Folk Art tradition of the area.

The Antiphonitis church was the center of a monastery. It dates from the end of the 12th century and was built by a monk from Asia Minor. The dome of the edifice rests on eight stone columns which form an octagon. The two columns in the east are detached from the walls and mark the division of the altar. This architecture is very unusual for Cyprus. Its barrel vaulted narthex and arcade, which was once roofed, were added in the 15th century. The stone balustrade between the arches and wood and clay rood of its arcade have not survived.

Ayios Epiktitos Vrysi is a Neolithic settlement on a small headland on the cost looking as if it is about to slip down into the sea, which actually happened to part of it. It is thought to have been occupied from between 4000 and 3000 BC, and according to the impression that the pottery and obsidian finds have been brought, by people from Cilicia, in Anatolia.

When the Arab raids on the coastline of North Cyprus became too much for the population of Lambousa, they moved inland to join their nearest neighbours, at Lapta. During the Roman period, Lapta (Lapithos) was one of four main administrative centres on the island, and being further inland, had been spared the regular raids that drove the Lampusa citizens away from the coast. In fact, there had probably been a settlement here much earlier, since excavations in the area have revealed Iron age tombs and calcolitic remains. An Orthadox bishopric was established ehre, but suppressed by the Crusaders in the 13th century.
