Larnaca, (Greek: Λάρνακα, Turkish: Larnaka) is a city of the Republic of Cyprus situated on the east coast of Cyprus. The major international airport, Larnaca International Airport is located in this city. In ancient times, Larnaca was known as Kition, or (in Latin) Citium. The biblical name Kittim, though derived from Citium, was in fact used quite generally for Cyprus as a whole, and occasionally by the Jews for the Greeks and Romans. Larnaca is colloquially known as "Skala" (Greek: Σκάλα).

The important archaeological collection of the Pierides Foundation Museum in Larnaca, Cyprus, was begun in 1839 by Demetrios Pierides at a time which was critical for the cultural heritage and archaeology of Cyprus. In the nineteenth century under the Ottoman rule there was no protection of antiquities. Archaeological artifacts were being sold by various dealers, diplomats, and bankers to museums abroad for money.

The Mosque of Umm Haram is the chief Muslim shrine on the island and an important holy site for the entire Muslim world. It is also a listed Ancient Monument of B Schedule no.8 in the Larnaca District. The accounts regarding its existence have generally been dated from the first Arab raids on Cyprus (A.D 647 or A.D 649). The most likely account tells of the death of the wife of “Ubada bin al-Samit”, Umm Haram, during a raid upon the island organized by Muawiyah. She fell from her mule and died after breaking her neck during the siege of Larnaca. She was buried near the salt lake and her grave became a sacred shrine. Hala Sultan (Umm Haram) was the Prophet Muhammad’s ‘wet-nurse’.

High water levels at Larnaca salt lake cause difficulties for the feeding of the birds (they are bottom feeders) with diminishing numbers during very rainy winters and feeding at the shallow margins of the lake(up to 70-80 cm).

The old Aqueduct, also known as Kamares (Arches), was built to provide Larnaca with water. It stands outside the town on the way to Limassol. It was built in Roman style in 1745 to carry water from a source about 6 miles south of Larnaca into the town.

Since 1998, the ancient site of Choirokoitia has been on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage official list. This Neolithic settlement was found in a better state of preservation than most others from its period, not only in Cyprus, but in the entire Eastern Mediterranean. Through its consecutive phases of building, Choirokoitia reveals a comprehensive history of the Neolithic period in Cyprus and the spread of Neolithic culture throughout the region.

he church of Agios Lazaros is built on the coastal zone of the city of Larnaka and is the primary place of worship of Agios Lazaros in Cyprus. The saint�s relationship with the island was particularly close. Following his resurrection he fled to Cyprus, where he met the Apostles Pavlos and Varnavas who ordained him bishop of Kition. The sources also mention that he was laid inside a marble larnax, which bore the inscription "Lazaros the fourday and friend of Christ". Following an edict by the emperor Leo VI, the Saint�s relic was transferred from Kition to Constantinople. According to tradition, the church was built during that period (beginning of the 10th century), with imperial funds as an exchange gift for the transfer of the Saint�s relic to Constantinopole.

The monastery is located about 15 miles west of Larnaca, which stands on the peak of a striking lone mountain over which St. Helena, the finder of the cross of Jesus, saw a strange light gleam. Taking it as a sign from heaven, she founded the monastery and left a piece of the Cross enshrined there.

Bordering Larnaka’s central coastal promenade, Phinikoudes Beach is one of the most famous in Cyprus. “Phinikoudes” means small palm trees (now grown into very big palm trees) that were planted in 1922. The beach has fine grey sand and is some 500 metres long. The width varies from 30 metres to 100 metres. The area is popular for its cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels. There are also a large number of mini markets close to the beach. The commercial and shopping centre of the town is just behind the promenade. The main road, Athenon Avenue, is planted with palm trees, green areas and colourful flowers that add to the magnificent scenery
